Every city should have a zoo

THE TASK

Imagine that you are doing a project “Every city should have a zoo” together with your friend. You have found some illustrations and want to share the news. Leave a voice message to your friend. In 2,5 minutes be ready to tell the friend about the photos:

  • Give a brief description of the photos (2 features connected with the subject of the project in each photo minimum);
  • Say in what way the pictures are different (2 features connected with the subject of the project minimum);
  • Mention the advantages and disadvantages (1-2) of having a zoo in a city;
  • Explain how the photos illustrate the project “Every city should have a zoo”;
  • Express your opinion on the subject of the project – whether you would like to have a zoo in the city where you live and why yes or no.

You will speak not more than 3 minutes (2-3 sentences for every item of the plan, 12-15 sentences total). You have to talk continuously.

THE ANSWER

Hi, … I hope that you haven’t forgotten about the project we are going to do together. You know, I have found a couple of great pictures for it.

In the first picture there is a lion which is resting on the special construction made by people. In the background we can see the bars of the enclosure so it’s obvious that this animal lives in a zoo.   In the second one two bears are playing on the field. I believe that these animals don’t live in captivity as there is endless forest in the background.

These two pictures have a couple of differences. Firstly, they underline two different ways of observing animals: in the zoo and in the wild. Secondly, the presence or absence of other species in the pictures is a significant difference too.

I suppose in the project we have to mention the advantages and disadvantages of having a zoo in a city. It’s obvious that people build zoos to show their children how the wild animals look and live so they are useful as an educational tool. For the specialists it is easier to observe wild animals’ behavior and habits while they are in the zoos. Also zoos are built to save endangered species, I think. As for disadvantages of keeping wild animals in the zoos I would like to mention that the enclosures at a zoo change the natural behavior of the animals. Moreover, zoo animals can have health issues that wouldn’t come up in the wild.

I think that both of these photos properly illustrate the topic of our project. The first one shows the wild animal living in a zoo, while the second one presents bears living in their natural habitat. Both pictures together provoke reflection and arguments about our topic.

Zoos have their advantages and disadvantages, so my attitude to them cannot be strongly positive or negative. When I was a child I loved zoos but now I am not a big fan of keeping animals there.

I want to know what you think about my ideas as soon as possible so, please, call me back.
