redundancy (noun — существительное) излишек, избыточное количество
to tend (verb — глагол) иметь тенденцию ( к чему-л. ),склоняться ( к чему-л. )
it tends to become hot in the afternoon — после полудня обычно становится жарко
prices are tending upwards — цены растут
he tends to exaggerate — он склонен преувеличивать
to scratch (verb — глагол) чесать, скрести
vice-versa (adverb — наречие) наоборот

В каждой хорошо написанной книге присутствует огромный излишек, я, например, читаю только правые страницы и позволяю своему уму додумать то, что написано слева. В плохо написанное книге приходится читать каждое слово.
